Though sometimes overproduced, the man's a stylist who bends his material to his will and inhabits it--be it a love song, a novelty tune, or a modern rodeo tale--like few others. And his well-worn baritone leaves little doubt about the pounding he himself took on the rodeo circuit. These are not his 20 biggest hits--some weren't even singles--but they are fan favorites. There are the duets (with Garth, Charlie Daniels, and even Jon Bon Jovi), grinding guitar romps ("Life Is a Highway"), serious rodeo and cowboy mythologizing ("Hooked on an 8 Second Ride," "Western Skies"), and even a Springsteen song ("Tougher Than the Rest") that serves LeDoux's own tough-tender persona admirably. --John Morthland | | | |

Well, 3.5 stars really, but my tastes are different than most... Jan 08, 2010 If you want a good CD that shows off the rock side of rodeo vocalist Chris to good advantage, this one's for you. My wife likes it very much, especially the duet with Garth Brooks on "Watcha Gonna Do With A Cowboy?" I always liked the quality of Mr. LeDoux's voice, and his rodeo songs. Although I only owned a few of his albums during his lifetime, my favorite remains "Old Cowboy Classics" which I dearly wish had 20 traditional-style ballads on it instead of ten. I was disappointed a few years ago when I searched Chris's entire discography, hoping he had recorded a version of the best rodeo song I ever heard, one penned by '60's folkie Peter LaFarge. The title is "Don't Tell Me How I Looked Fallin' (Tell Me How I Looked ON)" and it would have been a natural for LeDoux. Alas, I guess he never came across it in his career. (The LaFarge version was on an LP titled "Women Blues" on Verve/Forecast and has not been put out on CD.)Well, this compilation is more uptempo honky-tonk than old-fashioned cowboy, and Chris fans who don't own it already ought to buy it. He was an interesting artist and man, who deserves to be remembered and whose performances are still rewarding to hear.
RIP Chris Ledoux May 06, 2009 I must admit that I am not the biggest Chris Ledoux fan, in that I don't own any of his albums except for this Greatest Hits collection. Everytime I listen to this album though, I remember how great of an artist Chris really was. This set includes all of his standards, from the up tempo fun stuff like "Cadillac Ranch," and "Dallas Days/Ft. Worth Nights," to the slower offerings like "Look At You Girl," and the surprisingly deep "Bang A Drum." His live sets were legendary, and indeed, I would not hesitate to pick up his live album either, but if you are just looking to have a great time jamming out in your car or on your iPod, this is a great CD to have.

Sorry Oct 03, 2006 I'm going to spoil the party. But first I want to make clear my bona fides: Chris is my favorite singer of all time, I have all his CDs, I've loved his music for more than 25 years, and I was a member of his fan club for a long time (till the founder died). BUT... I am so tired of Capitol/Liberty reissuing Chris compilations (this one, best of, box sets, live, early years, rock 'n' roll collection, etc.). And a year and a half after Chris' untimely passing, it still hasn't ended ("Anthology" and "Ultimate Collection"). Enough! As much as I love Chris LeDoux, where does this CD come from? Greatest hits? As great as he was, he had NO hits! This is just shameless commercialism, although at least Chris' widow and kids benefit.
Awesome Aug 27, 2006 The best of a legend but in one package. Chris Ledoux left us way to early. This should have been his first of many greatest hits.
